Active Tourism

Active tourism is strongly linked to its surroundings, what predominates is the active participation of individuals with a sport that is linked to nature.

In Silleda groups are emerging and even tourism companies which offer, as well as activities like hiking or sightseeing, others regarded as adventure sports, such as canoeing, rafting, archery, petanque, fishing, hunting and clay pigeon shooting.

Along these lines we are given a good example of the new tourism being offered and where what matters is the activity and not just the place.

There exists graphic testimony that bowls has been a presence in our lives through the years.

In the Monastery of El Escorial there are 17th century tapestries by the Zaragozan Ramón Boyau, Goya’s brother in law, where the painter shows scenes from the time of Carlos III. In these embroideries such as “The Gardener", "The Game of the Heifer", "The Game of Bowling" and others you can see how there is no separation of the social classes and its practice encourages friendships between neighbuors and peoples.

The popularity of this sport in Galicia can be seen by the numbers it attracts, in the order of 50 teams, to the championships in A Bandeira

The Petanque Club is the only one that is federated in the deza region, thus, limiting the regional competitions to Vigo and A Bandeira.

Brief history: Year 1977. - Four locals of A Bandeira, and neighboring parishes, returning from having emigrated to France play in the Campo da Feira with iron balls that no one understands but are in awe of.

Year 1978. -  The Bandeira Petanque Club is founded, enrolling in the Galician Federation. On its debut it was proclaimed champion thus, being promoted to the top and participating in the Spanish Championship in Sevilla, representing Galicia. It achieved ninth place.

Year 1979. - It is proclaimed winner of the Galician Championship (Division of Honour) and plays the Spanish Championship in the Alicante in the town of Benidorm representing Galicia.

Year 1980. - Again represents Galicia, plays in the Spanish Championship in Santander, and achieves seventh place.

Year 1883. – Once again it is up to the club to represent Galicia in the national tournament, this time held at Arenas del Mar (Barcelona).

The Petanque Club has organized since 1979 the summer petanque championship “Festas de Bandeira-Trofeo Concello de Silleda”, one of the most reputable in Galicia, because of its substantial cash prizes (1,500 €), and the fact that it brings together approximately 150 teams.

How it’s played: To play this sport you need a particular type of physical strength, but it is a game of skill and nerve. These features make it accessible to men and women regardless of age.

Whoever wants to be initiated in the sport can find any weekend afternoon, good and accomplished teachers playing in the existing field in the Praza do Antroido in the town of A Bandeira. They will try to make it a pleasant and productive day.
